The highs and lows of the Error Fare – a missed Air France First Class opportunity.

I have had mixed success with Error Fares over the past couple of years. With every one you catch, you miss one or the dates, routes don’t work for you.

I don’t live on the west coast but would have happily made my way over there to connect onto this mornings fare. $637 one way or $1500 return to fly Air France A380 First Class to London via Paris.

I need to be in London that Friday so went straight for it once I saw it. Hoping to snare a one way ticket for the outbound leg.

Sadly when I got to the booking page the airline had pulled the fare and it was back to normal which is slightly higher and a little out of my price range, at $13,000 one way. So back to Norwegian it is……

It will be interesting to see if Air France honor this one as it may prove quite costly. If anything you can see the huge discrepancy in fares when these errors appear. Oh well you win some, you lose some – onto the next one.

A cocktail a day for $10 a month. Still sounds to good to be true.

A few months ago i wrote about an app called mealpal which for a monthly subscription allows you collect your lunch from a variety of places every day. It had a great sign up bonus with gave you a $50 amazon voucher which essentially bought your lunch down to $3 a day. Which if you live and work in Manhattan is pretty unbeatable.

The latest app offering something similar is called Hooch and it gives you a drink a day in selected bars in cities across the country for a monthly subscription of $10. A single cocktail in Manhattan usually costs in excess of this which makes this a no brainer in theory.

Over time it will surely change and there is already a premium plan and terms and conditions for certain bars but if your local is on here or you just like trying a few new places you may aswell give Hooch a try.

Static-BoxIf you fancy giving the app a go there is a link below which will get you your first month for $1 you then get your own link which can get you up to six months for free. Remember to tip the the bar staff and if you like the place, have a second one or a bite to eat. There is surely some double dipping opportunities with the airline dining programs and MOGL.

Hooch currently works in around ten major cities in the US and in Hong Kong, check it out enjoy a few free tipples.

DT will be trying out few venues in New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong in the next few weeks and will let you know how I get along.

Let’s have a drink! Check out the Hooch App and get a free drink a day for only $9.99/month! Enjoy your first month for only $1 by using this link: 17791f

Summer 2018, Primera Air: Newark/Boston – London/Paris/Birmingham from $99

Another year another low cost airline. Launching in April 2018 Primera Air will offer rock bottom, no frills fares across the Atlantic. They have leased two A321 neos which will operate from Boston and Newark to London Stansted, Birmingham and Paris.

Much like Norwegian and Wow the lowest fares will only get you a seat and once you add seat selection, meals etc. the price will rise. But we’re all getting used to that now so what’s the big deal.

Currently the basic fares out of the US in the summer months are very reasonable actually starting at the promised $99 and rising to $200. The return legs are slightly higher but it is possible to get a round trip for between $400 and $500. They are charging $80 to upgrade and include seat selection, checked bag an a meal. So even if we call it $660 it’s still pretty reasonable for peak summer.

The Newark flight to London departs at 10.50pm so really all I would be concerned with is a decent seat to try and sleep. Those are pricing at $50 for exit and XL seats and $40 for anywhere else onboard. Rows one to four are a premium class which is pricing closer to $750 all-in the day I looked.

I’m pretty tempted to buy a one way $139 fare in June as I know I’ll need it and I don’t believe anyone will go cheaper. While Stansted isn’t ideal in some respects it will allow low cost connections all over Europe without the need to go into London.

However I do think it will be interesting what the major airlines do next summer and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a price war as there are now so many seats over the Atlantic. So if you are booking a summer family round trip maybe avoid for now, but if you need a cheap one way they are unlikely to go lower than this.

Promotion: Long Haul BA Flights from 6,500 Avios. Including NYC, Dubai, Singapore and 87 others.

British Airways have today launched a great Avios promotion for the first six months of 2018. They have reduced the Avios needed for most long haul international flights by 50%. The program already has peak and off-peak rewards which makes today offer particularly tempting in many markets.

These fares have to start or finish in London, which is the only thing to be wary of. London has some of the highest airport taxes in the world making it more expensive to fly out of. But these taxes are not applicable when you fly into London.

As you can see a London to New York Fare here is a very attractive 6,500 Avios but with a fairly hefty $278 charge on top. This is made of taxes and the fuel surcharge BA insist on charging.

However the UK taxes drop off going in the other direction to $178. Still steep but certainly affordable. This can be combined with a cheap Norwegian flight or using miles to travel back with a different airline. Sadly taking advantage of open skies and flying from Paris doesn’t get around this problem as you don’t go through London.

There are 90 routes available in this promotion. Dubai and Singapore above again have fuel charges but a very low amount of Avios required. I will be playing with this for a few days and hope to find some more sweet spots.

If you have Avios in your account this could be a great way of getting more in seat miles per point.

Error Fare: Lufthansa Stockholm to NYC – €235

Super Fare this morning available flying from Stockholm to NYC with Lufthansa with a Frankfurt exit possible. Lots of dates in Feb and March available.

This can be found on skyscanner and is bookable via Lufthansa directly which means it will very likely be honored.

Even if you are not based in Stockholm it’s worth adding a layover in to take advantage of this fare and fly on the Lufthansa A380 or 747-800.

Move quickly on this one as it won’t last.

ERROR FARE: Canada to The Philippines for $311

Check out momondo.ca if you fancy an escape to Asia in December. A China Eastern mistake fare is offering round trip flights from Toronto and Vancouver to Angeles in the Philippines for just over $300.

This is a bargain to get to that part of the world and you can connect from Angeles to other parts of Asia.

Check it out and as always don’t book any extras until the fare is ticketed.

Do your Christmas shopping on Amazon and fly for free on Jetblue

With Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday out of the way all roads now lead to Christmas. The most organized will have already bought all their gifts but I would wager most haven’t and spent more money on themselves yesterday than on others.

As you do your Christmas shopping this year don’t forget to collect those extra airmiles where available. One website that most people will end up using is Amazon.com. If you click through your Jetblue account you will get 3 points per dollar spent and these can add up quickly..

There is no fixed chart for Trueblue redemptions. The cheaper the ticket the fewer points you need to book it. This has its positives and it’s negatives but as you can see below you need just 2600 points to travel between Long Beach and San Francisco in a couple of weeks.

The moral of the story is, collect miles wherever you can. Some redemptions are very low and you could be flying after a few holiday purchases on Amazon.
